Understanding The Wharton Difference Global Opportunities

Today, everyone working anywhere can directly or indirectly identify a global dimension to their work. My previous posts on defining your fit with Wharton addressed three of the four components of â€Å"The Wharton Difference† (Largest Global Network, Culture of Engagement, and Innovative Leadership Learning).   Here I’ll look at the fourth, final component: Global Opportunities.    BUT†¦ you might think, all top MBA programs have a global dimension; why is it part of The Wharton Difference?    The answer lies in how those specific opportunities align with the other three components by emphasizing connection, growth through experience, sharing/collaboration, and exploration.   This is evident in the following phrases: †¢ The Global Opportunities prepare you for â€Å"an interconnected world.† †¢ You will â€Å"immerse yourself† in local cultures and business approaches. †¢ You will â€Å"extend† your experience to your classmates as part of a â€Å"global community.† The bolded words above reveal the adcom’s distinct lens on the global dimension:   its global resources start with you connecting with other people and groups to understand and eventually impact global business holistically. BUT†¦ What if your goals don’t include global enterprise?   Perhaps you plan to launch an IT initiative in a region of the U.S. where coal mining is dying.   Perhaps you plan to develop strategy for domestic healthcare provider chains.   In the first case, other countries, e.g. Poland, face the same challenge; perhaps there’s a prospective global collaboration on the horizon!   In the second case, perhaps learning from countries with different healthcare systems would give you fresh ideas to adapt. Today, everyone working anywhere can directly or indirectly identify a global dimension to their work.   If it’s not immediately obvious, think further, and you will surely discern how it’s so in your own situation. For some, a picture is just a beautiful work of art, but for Lewis Hine photography was a way to communicate a message to the world. When Hine was taught the photographic process, it was still being established. This being said, photojournalism was also just evolving as a method to visually communicate information. In an effort to better his photography skills, Hine began to photograph the immigrants of Ellis Island. He was very adamant about social reform and reflected this in his work. Lewis Hine’s captivating photos inspired social change in America for the less fortunate. Hine’s father passed away when he was still a child, forcing him to mature early and quickly learn the importance of hard work. Lewis Hine grew up in Oshkosh,†¦show more content†¦Ellis Island was the gateway to America; the mass of immigrant’s were the subjects for his photographs. It is amazing that Hine was able to capture such powerful photographs considering the equipment and subject matter. Hine even commented on how it was a struggle at first to work the outdated equipment around the chaos of Ellis Island. â€Å"The camera was a modified box type with no swingback and when one wanted to make a vertical composition after doing a horizontal, he had to unscrew the box and turn it down onto its side.† Even though it was a struggle Lewis Hine’s photographs of Ellis Island capture a tender moment that most photographers could not capture. I find it amazing that Hine was able to talk people into stopping and allowing him to take their photo. Wit h the people he stopped he was very good at capturing the drama of the scene. This can be seen in his photograph titled Italian family looking for lost baggage (1905 figure 1) This photograph like most of Hines’s from Ellis Island shows the uncertainty that immigrants experienced. The mother’s face in this image is what draws me in the most. The look of fear and strength within her face is so powerful. The composition of the photo keeps you moving though out the image and brings you back to the mother’s face. Another powerful photo from Ellis Island is Italian Madonna (1905 figure 2). Innate means that you are born with it. Intelligence isn’t something that you are born with, as one grows so does your intelligence. If you train your brain in a specific topic it could be math, science, history, etc. you can become more intelligent, but first let’s back track for a bit. Intelligence. We all have heard of this word. Do we really know what intelligence is? Besides that, these applicants have also disappointed their families which put a lot of hope in them to enter prestigious universities. Not only would their family members have to learn the fact that their child has been rejected from entering the university not because of their qualifications but their unethical behavior, they would also have to face criticisms about their child’s action from the public. Reasons that may have caused the applicants to hack into the system to acquire their results could be because they were too impatient to wait for the official announcement that is weeks away. So out of curiosity, they clicked the link that the original anonymous hacker provided on some websites. The applicants probably thought that it would not be a big deal or even unethical by doing so because they were only clicking on a link that was provided on the website. Some applicants and other message-board posters gave comments saying that they failed to see the ethical issue presented. Some even went so far as to say that these individuals should be applauded. Some applicants did not even realize that they were looking at private information because the directions were emailed from other students who had copied them from websites. Lastly, the applicants could also be affected by the pressure from families to know the results.
