China, accept herself to be the most civilized and advanced country, did not feel the need to satisfy Britain, a barbarian countrys request for freer trade and were refer the British wanted land. Britain however, had no desire for land and only wished to trade, believing it was their right to do so. These misunderstandings and differing opinions were only the start of more to come. They set the foundations to the British and Chinese hostilities. Chinas monopolistic system of t rade caused great frustration for the British. The incompatible British and Chinese views on trade resulted in the First Opium War.all(a) trade in China was channeled through the city of Canton and was regulated by a group of Chinese merchants known as the cohong who imposed endorsement taxes. Arthur Millers Death of a Salesman as Epic Tragedy Essay -- Death Sal

Arthur Millers Death of a Salesman as Epic Tragedy Aristotles Poetics defines the making of a dramatic or epic tragedy and presents the general principles of the turn of events of this genre. Surprisingly, over the centuries authors have remained remarkably close to Aristotles guidelines. Arthur Millers twentieth century tragedy Death of a Salesman is an example of this adherence to Aristotles prescription for tragedy. It is significant to test Aristotles explanation and requirements of tragedy by comparison and contrast, against a contemporary tragedy and to make observations with regard to what influence society and culture may have on the genre. This tidings however, will be confined to the realm of plot and the more notable aspects of the construction of the incidents in tragedy because of the complexity of this element. Aristotles attention throughout much of Poetics is enjoin towards the requirements and expectations of plot. Plot, the soul of tragedy, Aristotle says, mus t be an imitation of a noble and complete action. In Death of a Salesman, Miller does provide a complete action, that is it has what Aristotle identifies as a beginning, a middle, and an end. These divisible sections must, and do in the case of Death of a Salesman, meet the criterion of their respective placement. Whether Miller provides a nobel action, however, is an issue of culture. Willy Loman ultimately takes his own life so that his son Biff may benefit from the insurance money that he will receive. The question then, is according to our culture is his suicide noble? Since Willys suicide is perpetrated for Biffs benefit, one could view this act as sacrifice. Sacrifice is in our culture, a pious and admirable quality, one of... ...ath of a Salesman Twentieth deoxycytidine monophosphate Literature. January, 1972. 19-24. Rpt. in World Literary Criticism. 1A pattern that was common among the ancient civilizations of China, Rome, Greece, Mesopotamia, Egypt, and India was that close of them started as a dictatorship, a monarchy, or a dynasty. Eventually, most of them changed to a democracy, republic, or to class systems. Almost all of the civilizations had one or two great leaders. For example, Egypt had King Tut, Greece had Alexander the Great and Rome had Julius Caesar. China has had many contrasting leaders through the years. Dynasties, or a series of rulers from the same decent, ruled this government. Some of the most powerful dynasties were the Shang, Zhou, and Qin. These dynasties and many others ruled from the times of 1500 BC to 1900 AD. The dynasty that lasted the long-dated was the Zhou Dynasty. It lasted from 1122 BC through 256 BC. Leadership purpose reflective essay Essay

?After ceremonial this interview, I feel that a well defined leadership habit rehearsal is the distinction between a good leader and a great leader. Carolyn McKnights interview on leadership purpose statements really opened my eyes to the power of these statements, and the era and energy one unavoidablenesss to put into creating a leadership purpose statement. At first it seemed that completing a statement this powerful would be a very daunting task. After watching Mrs. McKnights interview, I am confident in my ability to come up with a statement, and that I leave consent the courage to follow through with it.The most significant thing in a true leadership purpose statement is reliableity fit in to Mrs. McKnight. Websters defines authenticity as real or genuine. Taking this and Mrs. McKnights statements into account I besidesk a minute to hypothesise or so how authentic I am. I realized that I know myself well enough to know where my strengths and weaknesses lie. A nonher aspect of my life that makes me believe in my authenticity is that legion(predicate) passel have told me they value my opinions. This is because I always tell them exactly how it is even when I know it is not what they desire to hear. With this knowledge I am able to establish creditability and responsiveness with other people. The question was asked How do you begin to determine leadership purpose? Mrs. McKnight gave several examples of what one can do to square off this. What is the root of my life? was one question she brought up that can help you find a purpose. I immediately identified the roots of my life as hard work, determination, and dedication. I attri barelye all my success in my life to these three principles. I started to weigh about failures that I have had in my life.It make me wonder if I would be able to find a place where I got off course and did not apply one of these principles. Another statement that stood out to me under this question was Find what give s you meaning. My achievements are what give me meaning. I learned more about why I feel this way by and by I took the Strenghts Finder assessment. It pointed out that I was an Achiever and could not be satisfied at the end of the day without feeling that I had achieved something. Every object that I accomplish makes me feel more confident and more ambitious about what else I can achieve.Out of the examples she gave these are the two I think that bequeath help me determine my leadership purpose statement. The part of the interview that discussed people struggling with conflict, with their leadership purpose was something that I really focused on. archean on in the interview an example was given that an acorn will become an oak. When the subject of struggle comes up Mrs. McKnight ensures us of this fact and mentions to not dispute it. She goes on to guggle about all the people pleasing we do throughout our lives. This was a huge eye opener to me because I notice my need to plea se people, like my family. This causes conflict with the telling it straight attitude that I try to maintain with the people in my life. When I find myself trying too hard to please people, I lose some authenticity and it weakens my purpose. She stated that we really need to find what we want and not what other people want for us. I can see myself struggling with this as I develop my leadership purpose statement. I liked that she mentioned having the courage to follow what you deeply want.To me, people who can follow a path to what they want while sticking to it through the good times and the bad are really courageous. Emotional parole was another key area brought up in the interview. The three areas that were brought up under this topic are self sentience, social awareness and self regulation. Our textbook book offers another interesting point that supports Mrs. McKnights insights. The text book says that mental intelligence will get you into a management position but it stops b eing helpful after entry into that position.A leader needs to have good emotional intelligence to continue to lead. Self awareness has to do with my purpose and I am working towards finding that in this class. I know that I worry about how other people grasp me but I do not think that is the same thing as recognizing it, which is social awareness. I think that I will have to slip away some time mastering the first two elements of emotional intelligence before I can work on self regulation. I do not know how I can stick to a path and make corrections to get back to it, until I have established a clear path. There were some interesting comments made about behaviors that help us get closer to our purpose. A reflective practice of checking in in two ways a day was brought up. I thought about how I might do this and I know that I would struggle with this significantly. I worry about how honest I would be with myself, so I would have to check in with my wife or a close friend that will dungeon honest with my feelings. I would have never thought that some kind of physical activity would help me get closer to my purpose. After hearing Mrs. McKnight talk about these practices I can see how it would help. A great example of a physical activity that can help you is the one Mrs. Enders gave on how put and stance help the way people perceive you as a leader. I hunch over, it is mainly because I am tall and do not like being overly imposing to others. It is something that I can work on physically that might help me with my purpose. The examples of purpose statements that were given were amazing.I think that the statement I am a drop of water, flowing peacefully, showing love carving deep canyons out of granite was an insightful statement. I think this will stay with me for a long time not because of how insightful I found it but because of the story that went with it. The fact that the CEO was able to recognize that he was not following his statement and quit his job in order to find a path back to it, was very inspirational. I want to have that kind of courage and belief in my purpose statement and I will think of this story heavily, while I am creating it.After watching this interview a few times in preparation for this paper, it really helped me get a grasp on the concept of a leadership purpose statement. This interview has given me a good set of tools for not only creating a good purpose statement, but lettered how to stay true to it, and knowing how to deal with obstacles I will face while trying to live by it. By taking the time to reflect on this interview I started to learn more about a subject I have not spent much time on Myself.

Cultural Background Paper Essay

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization 2002) defined Culture as the set of distinctive spiritual, material, intellectual and emotional features of fiat . it encompasses, in addition to craft and literature, lifestyles, ways of living together, value systems, traditions and beliefs. With migrant ethnic groups, they become so far removed from their homeland that their traditions have considerably been altered, are gone, or solely forgotten. It was mostly after World War I, in the 1500s to the 1800s in the Great Migration when most African immigrants were taken against their will to the New World. They were brought in as slaves and their sturdy work was responsible for the prosperity of the New World. Similarity of African and American Culture. America is a melting pot, where all refinings meet and blend. America is multi-racial because of the continuous influx of foreign migration to American shores. The ethnicly-diverse population of America mak es it a pluralistic golf-club. The Wikipedia (11 Jan 2002) describes Africa as one continent with many worlds. Various ethnic, social and tribal groups make up Africa. Africa is more of a multi-ethnic ending.Contrasts between African and American culture. The difference between Africa and America is on certain significant cultural aspects. African society is male-dominant allele, where women submit to patriarchal authority. America is more liberal and espouses gender equality. Societal relationship in Africa is familial, very family-oriented even in business. America is individualistic. Food and alimentation in Africa is a ritual, in America food and eating is a basic need. Behavior, values and norms are often clannish or often hardened by the ethnic group or the clan.America has always been independent. Africa has many languages, America speaks only English. Having been born in America, I have totally embraced the culture that is predominantly American. However, this is not den ying my roots and my rich African heritage. On the contrary, I feel that there is something great that people like me can contribute to the mainstream culture. The prevail system of families, the sharing of trials and triumphs of Africans are cultural strengths that I would rather have than the individualistic ways of America. The equal treatment and opportunities to both sexes of America, to me however is more pleasant than the male-dominant pr playactices in Africa. The similarities in my cultural background and that of the dominant American culture made it easy to integrate to a society that is made up of culturally diverse people. I did not feel isolated or left out because of my color or creed. The similarities and differences of the both cultures had a positive effect on my life. I am shown the strengths and the weakness of from each one one. The primarily independent-thinking American culture is needful to make choices and standing by it.It is a trait that I commit in and which I try to be all the time. Food and Eating as rituals and basic needs at the same time are to me necessary for us to enjoy and sustain life. I do not wish to rush all the time and so I take every indorsement to find meaning in my every action. I believe that my own cultural background has to a certain extent contributed to the mix in the dominant American culture. When the early Africans banded to demand equal rights from a society that was once discriminatory of their race, it showed the world and history what unity can do to driving force for reforms. That movement has indeed gone a long way. There is respect for cultural diversity and equal opportunities now. In a culturally diverse society such as America, culture exchange flourished. With people of African descent like me in mainstream society, other people became aware of Africa. They got introduced to the sights and sounds, literature, its people, traditions, ways, and everything else. Pretty soon celebrated African A mericans are into government service, entertainment, the academe, the media, and business.I believe that to be the greatest contribution to of the African culture to dominant American culture. I learned of my cultural roots through a conscientious effort on my part. I k pertly I look different, I knew I belong to a defined group, I knew we had different ways of doing things, practically we have our own culture. I asked my parents about us, about our culture. Our family is one that takes pride on who we are. It became a pleasant, welcomed, and enlightening revelation. I take on books about Africa, searched the web for more information and watched movies about Africa. It was a moment of discovery. I connected to our cultural past. I have not let up until today. I still visit sites of Africa and learn more of my forefathers homeland. Having lived in America all these years, I know I have developed an entirely new culture that is neither African nor America. It might yet be a blend of b oth cultures. I may look and sound African, think and act American and I am African American. I have in me the clannish African and the independent American. The influences on me to develop a new culture are varied.Interaction with those people who belong to other dominant cultures, opportunities to experience these other cultures first hand, unconsciously picking up the best in each one and living it are possibly the first ones that come to mind. The world is getting smaller by the day. With the advent of modern means of travel and communication theory getting in touch is relatively easy. Cultures meet and merge every second, every day.
